Full calf with red leather title labels to spines. Bumped corners; wear to edges; scuffing, rubbing to boards; chipping to spines; spine labels missing from volumes IV-VIII, X, and XI. Remaining labels with chipping; joints worn and cracked, with rear board loose, and front board attached with tape to Volume I, front boards detached from Volume II, and nearly detached from Volumes VI and VII. Volume II with damp stain to front board, and front endpapers. Armorial bookplate and previous owner's name in contemporary ink to front pastedown endpaper of each volume; foxing throughout, most heavily to endpapers of each volume. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Gibbon in Volume I; 3 engraved folding maps, one in Volume I and 2 in Volume II. Map in Volume I has a 2" tear. Overall, a complete set in good condition.
