First American edition, original printed paper wraps (6x9.5"), 168pp. Housed in gray cloth chemise in 1/2 gray cloth slipcase with marbled paper over boards, morocco title labelon spine. Front wrap torn at hinge (4"). 2" tear to front wrap repaired, occasional foxing. Howes F68, Sabin 23960. Featherstonhaugh was a British subject and Fellow of the Royal Geological Society. He was hired by the U.S. War Department to conduct a geological survey of the interior of the country. An account of his excursion was published in London this same year in a larger format. His abolitionist views and Royalist sentiments make for interesting reading. JAM
