Features ISBN Number: 9781114734142 Author: Jeffries, David Publisher: C. and J. Ackers Location: St. John's Street, London Copyright: 1751 Edition Number: 2 Edition Description: Second Edition with large Improvements Publication Date: 1751 Cover Type: Leather Written in: English Illustrations: Y
London, Printed by C. and J. Ackers, in St. John's Street, for the author, 1751. 8vo (19 cm.), [6] VIII [18] 155 [3]p. +31 plates (30 original +1 added) and 50 ff. added plates. Later full red morocco lavishly gilt decorated on spine, both covers, dentelles and edges of covers. AEG, with marbled endpapers.
A nice copy of Jeffries' famous treatise on the scientific grading of diamonds and pearls in it's second (and best) edition. Described by Sinkankas as, "A worthy staple of the jeweler's literature".
While retaining the complete contents as originally published, a later owner added one plate from an unknown source to the plates showing brilliant diamonds (between numbers 5 an 6). In addition, at the end of Jeffries' plates and tables have also been added 50 more plates depicting engraved gemstones as rendered by Thomas Worlidge (1700-1766). Worlidge's drawings of gems were published (posthumously) as "A select collection of drawings from curious antique gems; most of them in the possession of the nobility and gentry of this kingdom; etched after the manner of Rembrandt". This was first published in 1768, then 1780 and the plates in a number of other works after that. Sinkankas discusses this at some length. The exact provenance of this set of plates is not known, but they are certainly scarce themselves and complement Jeffries' book very nicely
Armorial bookplate with initials "A.G." on pastedown, 2nd bookplate on FEP (likely a New York diamond merchant), third set of initials at top of TP. Spine darkened, lacks about 1/4 of single-panel leather spine label, corners gently bumped. Internally, very clean with almost no foxing. A very good copy. $2,300
