Berkeley Univ. of California Press 1918. Tall 8vo vi 406p. ribbed navy blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. Said to be the first history of symbolic logic in English and eventually became Symbolic Logic (1932) written with C H Langford. Lewis was a student of Josiah Royce and Wm. James and is sometimes described as the father of modal logic. Just a little wear to extremities of covers. Front cover has a dark horizontal line across it 1/4 of the way down and an equally dark inconspicuous stain in the middle (something spilled). A trace of this shows on the front endpaper. Otherwise quite clean and altogether sound. A very good copy of a scarce and desirable title in this first edition.
