Davy (1778-1829) is best known today for his experiments in electrochemistry, the discovery (including personal use) of nitrous oxide and his miner's safety lamp. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and was knighted in 1818. He is also known for employing his assistant, Michael Faraday. This account was written by his brother John, a physician. While still sound, covers show considerable wear to the extremities and the sides are rubbed as well. Three of four spine labels are lacking and the set bears the names of three different owners as well as the price paid for it in 1943 (somewhat less than the current one). Hinges becoming tender & a couple of dogears. Nonetheless, better than they sound- almost no foxing, supple paper and still quite a nice overall feel to the volumes. A very good set. Back To Top
