Features ISBN Number: 9781114748729 Author: Pauli, Wolfgang Publisher: Springer Verlag Location: Berlin Copyright: 1933 Edition Number: 1 Cover Type: Hardcover Written in: German Number of Pages: 272
Berlin, Springer Verlag, 1933. Offprint from Handbuch der Physik, 2d
edition, Vol. XXIV, Book 1. 8vo, [83]- 272p., plain black cloth with gilt
spine lettering retaining the original printed wrappers.
"The General Principles of Wave Mechanics" was written when Pauli was 33
years old, a dozen years before he won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1945.
This article was of such stature that it won praise at the time from
Hermann Weyl and was reprinted twenty-five years later without revision in
the next edition of the Handbuch, an almost unprecedented achivement
(DSB).
In addition to its own intrinsic value and scarcity (1 of c. 25 offprints
given to Pauli by the publisher and marked "Nicht Im Handel" [not for
sale]), this copy is of special interest because of the personal
relationship of Pauli to Otto Laporte, the recipient, and the place and
time where they met. Inscribed "Meinem Freund Otto mit herzlichen
Grussen, von W. Pauli" (to my friend Otto with heartfelt greetings . .),
Pauli sent it to his former schoolmate, Otto Laporte (1902-1971), then
living in Michigan. In 1921, on the recommendation of Max Born, Laporte
had gone to the University in Munich for advanced study with Arnold
Sommerfeld. Only nineteen years old, Laporte encountered Pauli (two years
his senior) who was then Sommerfeld's assistant, received help from him
with his studies and became his friend. At that time Sommerfeld was
considered the preeminent physics teacher in the world, having such
students as Heisenberg, Wentzel and Fues in addition to Pauli and Laporte.
Pauli received his doctorate in 1922 and Laporte in 1924.
After finishing his studies in Munich, Pauli worked for a time in Germany
and then spent his last thirty years in Zurich. Laporte's life took
rather a different turn. Upon his graduation, Laporte was recommended for
a Rockefeller fellowship in the U.S., spent two years at the National
Bureau of Standards and in 1926 went on to an extremely successful
teaching career at the University of Michigan. He worked there first in
spectroscopy and later in fluid mechanics. He is remembered by the
"Laporte Rule" in spectroscopy, posthumous membership in the National
Academy of Sciences, an endowed chair in his name at Michigan and an
annual Otto Laporte Memorial Lectureship in fluid dynamics.
So, in the (likely) words of the immortal Dr. Rosenbach, "An incredibly
fine copy!" A masterpiece in itself, intimately signed by a Nobel winner
to a friend and significant colleague, and with extended ties to any
number of the other greatest physicists in the twentieth century. Judging
by the overall wear and multiple signatures, Laporte prized this and
showed it to many friends. It seems inevitable that its next owner will
do the same.
Generalized wear to covers, particularly at extremities. Small repaired
tear to backstrip. Wrappers browned with age and there are a few tiny
corrections or check marks in the text. Signed three times by Laporte- on
front endpaper and on two succeeding blanks. As mentioned above, shows
signs of significant loving attention- VG-. Collier Brown, Powells.com
