Four volumes; 3 of text & 1 of plates. 4to. Half bound with blue marbled paper over boards. 416, 612, 568pp & 52(+1) plates. Two copies of Plate 6 from Volume 1 are present. Plate 9 from Volume 1 is bound out of order.
Volumes 1 and 2 have been rebacked, retaining original boards & endpapers. Volumes 1 and 2 are ex-library, with discard stamps from the British Museum and the Commissioners of Patents on the verso of the full title page.
Front board to Volume 3 and Plate volume almost completely detached, with wear to all boards.
The plates are bright with only occasional marginal staining not affecting the drawings. Plates 6, 7 & 8 (Volume 2) are lightly wormed at the fore-edge, not affecting the drawings. Plate 21 (Volume 3) is torn with slight loss at the bottom of figure 3.
This is a mixed edition set. Volume 2 has a copyright date of 1823.

Commissioned by the French government, A. G. Jars (17321769) visited European and Scandinavian mines to study their methods. Jars was the first metallurgist in France to melt copper with coke in 1769.
